Tony Kiser Theater

You can’t talk about Tony Kiser Theatre without talking about the Second Stage Theater company. Founded in 1979, Second Stage had a mission of producing second stagings of contemporary plays with the intent of providing a place for adventurous premieres, musicals, and reinterpretations of contemporary works. Many of the world’s most dynamic writers feature their work at Second Stage Theater venues, giving them a platform and location for discovery that more mainstream theaters would miss. For many artists, performers, and writers, the venues under the Second Stage Theater banner reflects New York’s diversity and reaches an ever-evolving audience interested in new-style stage performances and productions.

Despite their origin as a production house of “second stagings”, the theater company later expanded with a new mission of producing plays with their developing pool of writers. Soon, the productions included solo performances, avant-garde theatrical events, brand new musicals, and world and New York premieres by American playwrights. In 1999, Rem Koolhaas designed a 296-seat capacity venue that would serve as one of Second Stage’s greatest off-Broadway venues, The Tony Kiser Theater. The building was built around a building that was originally a bank after its 1920s construction. Ever since then, Tony Kiser Theater has been a driving force towards the Second Stage’s goals of supporting established and emerging artists with a focus on playwrights, directors, designers, and actors in creating long-lasting contemporary work.

The company, with support from Tony Kiser Theater, has earned over 125 citations including six 2016 Tony Awards for “Dear Evan Hansen”, three 2009 Tony Awards, 12 Drama Desk Awards, nine Theatre World Awards, 17 Lucille Lortel Awards, and more. The plays, musicals, and features that come to the Tony Kiser stage are often well-received, with critics and fans enjoying the undeniable talent booked for performances as well as amenities, features, and atmosphere that Tony Kiser Theater has made famous. Award-winning plays, musicals, shows, and events are never very far from the Tony Kiser Theater schedule, which further cements the Second Stage Theater’s goal of celebrating art, music, and performance.
